"The guys were bragging about bringing showgirls up to their rooms, getting them super drunk, and then trying to score with them right when the bombs went off. Typical Vegas-guy-weekend stuff. They were well into their 70s, though, so it was odd to hear their bravado."

Here she goes again. I've noticed lately I don't even need to ask questions she will just tell me anything, anything at all, barely taking a breath, like there's an hourglass only she can see with a ribbon of sand left to drop and she has to say Every.Single.Thing. before the sand is finally through.

"The operations had headings like Teapot and Sunbeam, and Bedrock and Quicksilver. And there were hundreds of tests. Tightrope. Checkmate. Small Boy. Zucchini. Chocolate. Bullfrog. Seafoam. Gouda. How can a nuclear test be named after cheese?"

Fascinating, but I wasn't up for a history lesson. No. Wait. That's not the right answer. I should be more interested in this and not, s...

PRIMARY PROJECT

Cassie and Marlo
a writing project

The Fiction Experiment

Latest Journal Post: different, but similar
First and foremost, heaps of thanks to everyone who is taking the time to read and critique this project. I know you could be twittering or something, so I appreciate the attention.

A question was posed to me recently about this: do I think this is my best work?

1) No. 2) Oh, God, I hope not.

I'm doing this for a number of reasons, as outlined in the previous blog posts. But, more importantly, I'm doing it to demonstrate that the creative process ebbs and flows, and that you have to take chances and get things out there if you're going to continue to create more or better work.

Everyone can write the BEST.THING.EVER.

In their heads.

But until you put the butt in the chair and actually hammer it out, you have no idea how it's going to work.

Which leads me to this: I'm a little bored with Cassie and Marlo. Some people like them. Others despise them. Me - I'm just bored with the two of them together. I've discovered that if I heard the two of them talking, no matter how interesting the subject, I'd probably tune them out.

So the experiment needs to be modified.

Now, saying this outloud, in public, does kind of freak me out a bit.

Is it an admittance of failure? Not exactly. If you're any kind of writer at all, you should have a few things tucked away in a folder or drawer that may never see the light of day again.

I'm not ashamed of posting this experiment in the open. However, I'm not going to pitch an agent with it, either.

Instead, I'm looking at it as a way to keep the pump primed and explore ideas. I've had a lot of writing projects I've picked up and put down over the years. That's not the bad part.

The bad part is not writing at all.

So the next installment of Cassie and Marlo will be completely different. I'm flexing my writing muscles to work on something bigger this fall, and I think this exercise is exactly what I need to learn how to fix certain problems, build stronger characters, and tap into my best ideal readers for their insight.

That means you. Your feedback is vital to this process, and a thousand thanks to you for helping me along. Take another look at the end of June, and tell me what you think.

RAVES

re: love on a train

I thought this dialogue worked very well.

re: the twig and berries reveal

It works! Natural-sounding dialog, interesting situation, and good characterization. Skillfully done.

re: the twig and berries reveal

I know I'm late with this, but I LOVE dialogue.

re: portrait of an artist: bonne finken

Thanks for the heads up.

re: portrait of an artist: bonne finken

I have to quit reading your columns at work. Devoured the entire interview, jumped to Bonne's website, listened, explored -- suddenly 30 minutes is gone. Oops! Thanks for introducing me to this talented woman! She's on the way!
