1.
What is Intrepid Media?
Intrepid Media is foremost a magazine, a community, a forum, and a publishing company. It was established to give people a place to show their work, talk about their work, compare and contrast their work, and ultimately improve their work. Turns out you can meet people and hang out too.
2.
What's in the Features section?
The Features section contains regularly running columns by the Intrepid Media Staff as well as selected columns from the gallery (posted by any and all intrepid media contributors - this means you!). New columns are published every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
3.
What's in the Gallery?
The Gallery contains all of the columns from Intrepid Media contributors. We encourage everyone to sign up and post a column of their own, no matter where your interests lie. Intrepid Premium members have no limit to the number of columns they can post in the Gallery.
4.
How do I sign up?
Simple. It's free, easy, and private. Go here to read more and sign up. You must sign up to write, discuss, and critique columns, and that's free. For access to the intrepid boards, no limit on the number of columns you can write, and your own intrepidmedia.com portfolio page, you must be a member of Intrepid Premium, and that's cheap, easy, and private.
5.
Does it cost anything to sign up?
Absolutely not. All we need is your name and your email address (which doesn't show up anywhere on the site). You can then write and publish a column, as well as discuss and critique other columns. Intrepid Premium costs about the price of a magazine, but it's more of a service, not content.
6.
What do I get when I sign up?
Well, for free, you get to write and publish columns, a maximum of two at any given time, for the world to see. You get to participate in column discussions. You get to rate and critique columns. You get to view your own ratings and critiques. You get love and support (not a guarantee!). With Intrepid Premium, you get unlimited column writing and publishing, access to the intrepid boards, your own site at yourusername.intrepidmedia.com (plus more as it comes in).
7.
I forgot my username and/or password!
Go here. Enter your username or the email address you used to sign up. We'll email your credentials to the email address you used.
8.
How do I critique a column?
The system will check and make sure you haven't critiqued a particular column before. There is a form at the bottom of the column where you can rate the column (the execution, NOT the topic) on a scale of 1 (bad) to 5 (perfect) and give the author some feedback comments. Intrepid Premium members also have individual sections on their columns where anyone can rate their style, mechanics, and content separately.
9.
Is my critique anonymous?
Absolutely. Only the author of the column (and the senior editorial staff - joe and jael) sees your critique and they only see the rating and the comments. Furthermore, they only see the critiques so they can take out anything that might be disturbing or threatening.
10.
Can anyone else see my ratings or critiques?
No. Only you.
11.
What's to stop me from bashing someone just because they're inexperienced or I don't like their writing style or I don't agree with the content of the column?
Don't be a jackass. You'll get banned.
12.
What are the discussions on each column?
Think of this as a sort of instant letter to the author. Every opinion generates further opinion. Some columns get no discussion, others get plenty.
13.
What's in My Studio?
This is the operations center for our contributors. Here you can edit and update your profile, create, maintain, and publicize your columns, and review your ratings and critiques by other contributors. Only you are privy to the information contained in your own Studio.
14.
How do I submit a column for publication?
Intrepid Media is different from other magazines. There is no submission process other than signing up and posting your column to the Gallery. Tell all your friends about it. You'll get them to read it as well as other Intrepid readers. We're constantly pulling columns out of the Gallery for a run in the Features section.
15.
How do I get my column into the feature section?
The Intrepid Media Staff is always trolling the Gallery for columns that we think may be worthy of some feature attention. Although we don't guarantee anything (ever!), sign up and post your column(s) to the Gallery. If your column generates a buzz, chances are it's feature-worthy.
16.
How are reads tallied?
Reads are tallied when someone loads your column up in their browser. Reads are not tallied when someone discusses or critiques your column.
17.
Am I giving up rights to my work?
No. We don't request rights or reprint rights. However, understand that when you post anything on the web it could be considered published, and it's up to you to disclose this information if you try to resell the work.
18.
Why only two free slots for columns?
We want to keep the material fresh, and this is the best way to do it. Go ahead and try new things, experiment, and then trash it all and start over. With Intrepid Premium, you get unlimited columns and more stuff, but it costs money. We learned a lot from those sites who gave the world away for free. They all went away. We'd like to be here for a while.
19.
If one of my columns gets published in the feature section, does it count as my two free column slots?
Nope. We're all about the writers. If we have to suck it up and give you another free slot, cool.
20.
What do I do if none of the topics or disciplines match my work?
You can either select "General" for the topic or the discipline (but not both), or you can email us and suggest a new topic or discipline.
21.
What's in the boards?
The boards are for Intrepid Premium members (sorry, I really am sorry about this, but if you put public boards on your site, you're asking for trouble). It's advice, gibberish, information, Q&A, notifications about literary happenings around the country, as well as a general discussion of pop-culture.
22.
What is Intrepid Premium?
Intrepid Premium is a subscription service for those who want it. Benefits and costs can be found here.
23.
How do I join Intrepid Premium?
Join Intrepid Media for free and then follow the instructions to become a premium member. It's cheap, less than the cost of a decent magazine. You get your own portfolio site at yourusername.intrepidmedia.com, access to the boards, unlimited columns, and more.
24.
How do I cancel my Intrepid Premium account?
Go here to read the cancellation policy.
25.
Can I get a refund if I don't like Intrepid Premium?
Short answer. For a one month subscription? No. For a 6 or 12 month subscription? Yes, on a prorated basis. We're not trying to screw you. Read the cancellation policy.
26. .
How do I upload my headshot?
(Premium Only) Go into Premium and select My Headshot. All the info you need is on the right. I am NOT going to get into how to capture and edit the image, there's a whole Internet out there to tell you how to do that much more eloquently than me.
27.
If I cancel my premium subscription, or if it runs out, do all my columns get deleted?
Absolutely not. In fact, even if you delete them yourself, it doesn't get you more space. Once you're no longer a premium subscriber, you get two slots to publish a new gallery column, regardless of how many you wrote as a premium subscriber. See how cool we are to you?
28.
If I cancel, can I renew?
Sure. When you cancel, you just revert back to normal contributor (free) status. So when you renew, you continue on from the day you renew.
29.
If I renew my subscription, when does it start?
If your subscription has expired, your new one starts from the day you renew. If you still have time left on your current subscription, the new one starts when the old one ends.
