fear ends here
welcome to intrepid media
by joe procopio (@jproco)

Well, uh... I've got to admit something to you. I figured I'd get up here and just kind of, you know, wing it. I've spent the last six months of my "free time" building up to this particular moment, and, although I know six months later this site will have changed drastically again, I can't help but feeling that this is a moment to be marked.

And words to mark moments by aren't cheap.

Welcome to the new, polished, scrubbed, tuned, toned, trimmed, and relaunched version of Intrepid Media. Yesterday we were an e-zine, one that catered to the creative soul - and there's some nobility in that, but we were a two dimensional object nonetheless. Today, we're a whole lot more. We're a community, a portal, a sounding board, a scratch pad, a hangout, and we have even more ambitious aspirations for the future.

When I first started this site about a year ago, I used it mainly as a reference and a showcase for the various editors I was pitching my column material to. I can't tell you how quickly maintaining that site got old. Some months later I got the idea to start the e-zine, one that put forth advice for the artist who, like me, was trying to get their foot into a door, any door. I also thought that Intrepid Media should cater to those at various levels of success so, hell, why not cater to all levels of success?

Like I said, I'm nothing if not ambitious.

I found a number of talented writers. Michael Driscoll, Adam Kraemer, and Michelle Von Euw were three who not only got it, but were also able to capture the essence of what I wanted to do. They wrote well and, in some instances, wrote about writing well. Jael McHenry, whom I've known for some years, not only wrote brilliantly but even started running certain aspects of the magazine. While this was going on, I suddenly realized that I could take all of the things I dreaded about my day job as a web consultant and put them to use for a greater good.

Thus you have what you see before you.

Intrepid Media is a community. Our members are contributors, and the community is open to everyone. Our goal here is to get you to sign up and post your work. And to read the work of others. There's some great stuff here already, but we're always hungry for more.

Intrepid Media is a forum. Each column has a discussion area attached to it. We encourage everyone to take the topics of these columns a little farther. Share your successes and failures, tips and tricks.

Intrepid Media is a podium. Everyone has something to say. I don't have to tell you this.

Intrepid Media is a portal. There's something here for everyone, whether your outlet is writing, music, fine arts, pop-culture, humor... it doesn't matter. Are there no columns here about modern dance? Put one up. They tend to multiply.

Intrepid Media is a support mechanism. We established critiques to promote the improvement process among our contributors. Put your test work up and see how it fares. Put your best work up and see if it shines.

Most of all, it's just plain fun. I hope you get out of it a fraction of what I get out of it.

So please, sign up and become a part of it. And be sure the read the FAQ to get the whole story. We really think you'll like it. Besides, it's free.

Whoops. The music means our time is almost up. But before I go, let me share with you the philosophy that ignited the spark that lit the tire fire that is Intrepid Media.

Fear ends here.

The industry is changing, and old standards are quickly being replaced by new ones. Online publishing, mp3, Flash, broad bandwidth, and e-commerce are all tools that are bringing down the walls that stand between the artist and the public. There is a need for this stuff, there is a need for this kind of outlet. I truly believe this.

Fear ends here.

Let's see what you've got.

And I thank you. Very, very much.
